Herbal Teas For Bloating: 3 herbal teas approved by a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist to stop bloating |

Feeling bloated? A leading gastroenterologist suggests ditching pills for natural kitchen remedies. Three herbal teas – basil, fennel, and ginger – are highlighted for their ability to quickly relieve trapped gas and discomfort. These simple brews, easily made at home, offer a soothing and effective way to calm your digestive system and find fast relief.

Bloating is a common digestive concern. About 16% to 30% of the US population experiences bloating. Bloating is more than an inconvenience – it’s a sign that your digestive system is struggling. And the relief most people turn to? Pills. But what if you can relieve bloating with the help of natural ingredients that you can find in your kitchen? Yes, we are talking about herbal teas – the ones approved by a leading gut doctor. In a recent weekly newsletter titled ‘3-Ingredient Tea That Stops Bloating in Minutes,’ Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist from California, talks about three herbal teas that can beat bloating in a matter of minutes. “If you’re feeling bloated and uncomfortable right now, there’s a simple tea that can give you relief fast,” he says. “Here’s what could really be happening: Gas is trapped in your digestive system, and you need something that naturally helps release it.

What is bloating?

Struggling with bloating?

Bloating can really interfere with your day-to-day life. This swelling or feeling of fullness in the abdomen is usually the result of gas in the intestines and can be caused by many things, including overeating, lactose intolerance, and constipation, according to the National Cancer Institute. According to the NHS, symptoms of bloating include:

  • The stomach feels full or bigger than usual
  • Pain or discomfort in the abdomen
  • The stomach is rumbling or making noises
  • Farting more than usual

While pills may offer temporary relief, these herbal teas recommended by Dr. Sethi promise a more lasting solution. Let’s take a look.

Basil tea

Tulsi Tea – Stress and immune support

According to Dr. Sethi, basil tea ‘works like magic’. “Basil has natural compounds that help relax your digestive muscles and release trapped gas. Most people feel relief within 15-20 minutes,” the doctor says, in a newsletter. But here’s the catch – you have to make the tea at home, rather than buying the commercial ones. No, it’s not as complicated as you think. The doctor has shared a simple recipe for preparing the tea. All you need to do is follow the instructions below.

  • Boil water in a pot or kettle
  • Wash fresh basil leaves thoroughly
  • Place basil leaves in a teapot or mug
  • Pour boiling water over the leaves
  • Let it steep for 5-10 minutes
  • Strain and drink hot

Fennel tea

Fennel, a common spice used in cooking sweet and savoury dishes, also has properties that improve digestion and reduce bloating. A 2017 review showed that a chemical found in fennel called anethole may help relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. This may help relieve bloating and improve digestion. The preparation method is similar to basil tea, except that you need to crush the fennel seeds before adding them to the water. Also, steep it for 10-15 minutes.

Ginger tea

Ginger tea

Ginger has been used for its medicinal properties for ages. A 2018 systematic review of clinical studies has shown that ginger has a carminative effect, which decreases pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, reduces intestinal cramping, and prevents dyspepsia, flatulence, and bloating. To make ginger tea, slice 1-2 inches of fresh ginger, and simmer it in water for 10-15 minutes. “All three of these teas help your digestive system relax and move gas through naturally. Keep the ingredients on hand so you’re ready next time bloating hits. Try one tonight and feel the relief,” he adds.

To save time, you can prepare a big batch. “Sip it throughout the evening – the warm liquid helps your digestive system stay relaxed!” the doctor suggests. So, the next time bloating shows up uninvited, instead of reaching for a pill, make yourselves a cup of herbal tea. Let warmth, flavour, and nature’s chemistry calm your gut and soul.
